Toshio Takahashi Biography

About Toshio Takahashi

Toshio Takahashi is highly regarded as a master teacher of flute performance and education. Moved by one of Marcel Moyse’s recordings at the age of nineteen, he started teaching himself flute. A year later, he began performing all over Japan as a member of the Ensemble Sonore and as a soloist. He studied musical expression with Shinichi Suzuki and later left Japan for the United States to study the flute and music intensively under the influences of Morcel Moyse, Pablo Casals, and others. After returning to Japan, Mr. Takahashi founded the Suzuki Flute School at Dr. Suzuki’s request.

Mr. Takahashi has had an instrumental role in sharing Suzuki Method techniques and values through an international network of teachers and teacher trainers. He is a member of the faculty at the Talent Education Research Institute, where he is responsible for training student teachers and for teaching applied flute and a course in musical expression. Takahashi has also been a frequent guest at international conferences, including conventions of the National Flute Association (USA), the Asia Suzuki Association, the Pan Pacific Suzuki Association, the European Suzuki Association, and the biennial meeting of the Suzuki Association of the Americas.  Flute teachers and students travel internationally to Japan to study with Takahashi, who is often a featured master teacher at Suzuki Institutes in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan.

Takahashi is the author of the Suzuki Flute School (Volumes: 1–11), progressing from “Mary Had a Little Lamb” to the Concerto in G Major, KV313 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
